It has been said that a ship is only as good as the sailors who sail it. The saying holds true for acapella groups. SHM is composed of 9 to 13 exceptionally talented musicians from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. While we are quite different individually, we all share the same love for music and good times. Read on and get to know us a bit, or better yet, book us for a gig and get to know us in person. Trust us, it's much more fun that way.

Jesse Herrera

Musical Director

Name: Jesse Herrera
Nickname(s): Metallic, guy guy
Class Year: 2009
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Voice Part: Baritone
SHM Since: 2006
Other Instruments Played: Guitar, Phin, Dirrbuqe

Favorite potato chip: Utz
Favorite historical empire: Phoenician

Favorite musical note:

Don Herrera is from Albuquerque, New Mexico but actually speaks English. He is the director of this fabulous group and is rather honored to receive the title after The Legendary Nate Piper. He began singing at 6 years old with the Albuquerque Boy Choir. With the choir, he toured many major cities throughout the US, England and Whales. At age 13, Jesse performed in the Santa Fe Opera's production of Carmen. During mid school (middle school) and much of high school, Jesse had the honor of being too cool to sing. During the Don's fourth year at St. Pius X HS, he regained his passion for song and almost regained his voice. Don Herrera is currently the student director of the WPI Men's Glee Club. He likes playing guitar with his grossly overgrown fingernails, singing with SHM, and root beer. He also enjoys being awesome. Jesse is never sarcastic. Ever.

He thoroughly enjoys singing and also enjoys playing ultimate, bowling, baseball, video games, listening to music, skiing, and chilling with his friends. Favorite musical genre: Newgrass

Favorite musical note:

Jarrod has been involved in music all his life, largely on the instrumental level. He has always enjoyed singing for leisure, whether it be singing loudly to himself in the car, or soothing you with a soft serenade. At WPI, he feels he can study Engineering, but still feel free to approach music (vocal and instrumental) seriously. Jarrod likes to record music, and hopes to pursue a career in music production & engineering/sound recording technology.

Kevin Black

Highly Reactive

Major: Chemical Engineering
Voice Part: Tenor II
SHM Since: 2005

Favorite ice cream: Black Raspberry
Favorite element: Potassium (K+)

Favorite musical note:

Kevin hopes to one day turn his life into a musical, where songs would break out in the most random places, and SHM is slowly making his hopes and aspirations come true. Kevin is really excited about almost everything and loves abbreves (abbreviations). In his spare time, Kevin makes GC's (good calls) TS's (true statements, not to be confused with transition states), can be found driving SNAP, playing RB or GH with his LG Joel, eating IC, cake, candy, talking about moles, KG', m's, or all of the above. Finally, Kevin is always thinking of how to be most efficient and wondering if anyone wants to sing the groove medley… bah bahhhh bah bah. No?

Geoffrey Hook

Acappella Hero

Name: Geoffrey Hook
Nickname(s): Geoff, Captain, G-Off
Class Year: 2010
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Voice Part: Baritone
SHM Since: 2006
Other Instruments Played: Guitar

Favorite fake accent: German
Favorite classic car: 1975 MGB Roadster

Favorite musical note:

Geoff began his musical career singing in a church choir as a boy soprano. Despite the fact that he was not religious and did not enjoy getting up early on Sundays, he was paid $4.50 per service (a lot when you're 8 years old) so he stuck with it. Over the years, both his voice and his love for music deepened significantly. Geoff's first foray into acappella began with the Concord Academy Chameleons. To date, Geoff has built a trebuchet, a Tab cannon, an Ion gun, an RC airplane, an electric bug, an MG roadster, an automatic donut-eating-guy... Geoff has been described as a Renaissance man.

Peter Worrest

Human Drum Set

Major: IMGD/Music
Voice Part: Bass
SHM Since: 2007
Other Instruments Played: Piano

Favorite VP Part: Apologize
Favorite Band: Ana

Favorite musical note:

Peter is glad to be singing in SHM again. He has sung for his whole life, and is excited for this new opportunity to do his thang. Peter has, in the past, dabbled in arranging, but mostly he just sings. Recently he started (and loves doing) Vocal Percussion work (VP), and hopes that VP is not the only thing in this future. In his free time (what free time?) peter plays with Photoshop, as he likes doing graphic design, and he listens to music. He also enjoys reading, gaming, and the occasional date with his girlfriend.

Joel Reed

Major: Mathematics
Voice Part: Tenor 1
SHM Since: 2006
Other Instruments Played: Kazoo

Favorite Stu: Fun Stu
Favorite number: 40

Favorite musical note:

Joel misses Stutap. When not singing, Joel wishes he was singing. He plays Guitar Hero and Rock Band in his spare time and is a force to be reckoned with while having a little plastic guitar in hand. Joel snowboards as well. As testosterone approaches zero, Joels voice approaches inaudible screeches.

Voice Part: Baritone
SHM Since: 2007

Favorite musical note:

Nate is going into year two at WPI as an environmental engineering major. Nate thoroughly enjoyed his first year as an SHM member and intensely looks forward to his second. During his free time (something not experienced often by WPI students), Nate enjoys listening to outstanding cacophony, breaking things on purpose, and interrupting people in mid-sentence. Actually, these are all things that irritate Nate. Nate actually enjoys physical activity, good company, and having his name to himself. Nate’s place of origin is Vermont, where his wonderful family and girlfriend reside.
